Marstrand is one of our absolute favorites. Marstrand is like a small world apart from everything else you find along the coast. The architecture and style are unique, it is well-kept, and there are many beautiful buildings to see.
There are several very good restaurants on the island, such as Mama's with its Asian Fusion, Lasse Maja with its exquisite meat and fish dishes, and you can't miss oysters and bubbles at Johan's Tavern.
If you're looking for some quick and good food, it's nice to have 'fish and chips' at the Arvidson Brothers on the pier.
The hiking opportunities around the island are superb, with several good swimming spots. You can also take the ferry to the mainland to hike on Koön.
There you can also take the bus for 10-15 minutes past a very nice golf course, Lycke Golf & Country Club.
We have mostly stayed at the 'Quay' which uses mooring lines extending into the strait. They are not always directly in front of the spot they belong to, so it can quickly cause some confusion and problems. In strong winds, there can quickly be some swell from the sea into the strait.

Marstrand is a really nice marina. It has all the facilities you need and is easy to acces. Brygga G is our favorite as it seems a bit more quiet than those closer to the Office of Hamnvärden.
The walk around the island is a must and afterwards you will find a good selection of restaurants.
Its worth noting that week 27 is a party week in Marstrand and the party also takes place on private boats in the marina ;)

Piers E and F are for pre-booking (Dockspot) but available if the lights are green. G , H and B are drop-in. A bit bumpy at the outer parts of the piers at strong westerly wind. Some of the mooring lines are broken - indicated by orange tape.

Surprisingly easy to dock, protected from wind, but some waves. Some of the harbors have so-called Mediterranean mooring, as another person here mentions, where you pick up lines from the water. These lines frequently get caught in propellers and bow thrusters.
Pre-booking costs extra, but there are also plenty of drop-in spots. It can be very crowded during events, but it's nice to anchor in the bay right next to here.

Docked at Wharf no 7. Unfamiliar with 'Mediterranean mooring', i.e., fixed moorings that are pulled up by dirty ropes lying on the bottom. Had to rinse the boat thoroughly afterwards! But once we figured it out, it worked fine. Well-protected harbor and a very scenic place with a wonderful coastal path around Marstrands Island. Recommended!

Marstrand stands out from all other places on the Bohuslän coast. While most places are old fishing villages, Marstrand has city status and is Bohuslän's smallest city. On Marstrandsön there are no cars, but cobblestone streets and wooden buildings. Here, one walks through history. The city was founded in the 13th century by the Norwegian king Håkon Håkonson. The church from that time still stands. When Bohuslän was transferred to Sweden in 1658, the construction of Carlsten Fortress began, giving the island its characteristic profile. It is definitely worth a visit even though it costs a bit of money. The homes of the fishermen from the herring fishing period in the 18th century still stand. However, in 1808 the herring were gone. In 1822, the first spa was built and the era of the bathers began. Marstrand became Sweden's most popular bathing place. King Oscar II came every summer from 1887 to Marstrand, which made the place a high-society destination. Society followed the king and a specific society house was built. Marstrand reflects a past wealth with beautiful wooden houses, but also a division with old fisher houses. 100% charm!
Today it is the boat tourists who characterize the city and Marstrand is the sailing center of the West Coast. There is a large guest harbor where boats from several nations lie, including several yachts over 50 feet. The harbor is sheltered from the southwest, but some swell from the sea outside can enter. Electricity and water on the piers.
There is a coastal path around the island and several bathing spots. There are a number of restaurants and cafés in the city as well as some shops. A small grocery store in the harbor. There is a ferry across the strait to the modern part of Marstrand. Here you will find more stores, but no charm.
In Marstrand, Skagerrak ends. If you sail further south, you sail in Kattegat.
Marstrand is not a place to be missed!
