Ramsö is a small island south of Koster. I had sailed past it several times without noticing it - from Kosterfjorden, it looks like a barren rocky island without any buildings. In 1985, I discovered that a fishing harbor was marked on the west side of the island. There were four of us boys on the trip; we had sailed long in strong winds and high seas and came into a sheltered harbor with some sea huts and a couple of houses. Inside the island, there were green meadows and old, beautiful houses with flowers around. This was an idyll! A fisherman collected the harbor fee. Since then, I have never sailed past but have gone ashore. And the island is today as it was back then. The only difference is that the fishing boats in the harbor have disappeared and there are no permanent residents left, but the houses are used by the fishermen and their descendants as summer homes. Even the fisherman who collected the harbor fee is the same.
The island has the world's finest small beach on the east side. Here there is light, fine-grain sand surrounded by smooth rocks and wild roses. It is south-facing and exposed to the southwest wind. On the west side, a bit south of the harbor, there is also a beach with a fine sandy bottom. It is north-facing and sheltered from the southwest wind, but the islanders don't always clean it of seaweed and other debris that washes ashore.
There is nothing to buy here except for the harbor fee. But it is nice to take a walk on the island. A good hiking destination is the water lily pond on the northwest side of the island. Follow signs to 'neckrosorna'. There is a nice view over the Koster archipelago here. Also, visit the old harbor.
The inner harbor is well protected from all winds. It is a small harbor, and it can be very crowded here in July. Up to 10 boats can be moored alongside each other. There is electricity at the dock, but no water. There is a chemical toilet in the harbor. The outer harbor is more like a natural harbor. It is safe in all winds except from the north, which blows directly in. There is no electricity here.

Ekenäs in the northeast is the largest harbour on South Koster. It is well-sheltered from the southwest. Within the breakwater, you'll be well protected from all winds, but the floating docks north of the breakwater are exposed to the north wind. There is electricity on the docks, but no water. In Ekenäs, there is a hotel, two restaurants, and a kiosk. It's a 10-minute walk to a nice beach on the north side of the island. 2 km to the store in the middle of the island.
South Koster is the largest island and the one with the most activity. It is quite flat and has a beautiful cultural landscape with meadows and pastures. There are a number of restaurants and cafes and a brand new (2016) mini-golf course with artificial grass. At the harbours, you can rent bicycles to get around the island. This is highly recommended. There is a country store and an ice cream bar in the center of the island. There can be a lot of traffic from three-wheeled mopeds and bicycles on the roads.

Stora Kornö lies just 7 nautical miles southeast of Smögen, but is the complete contrast to Smögen. Here there are no restaurants, tourist shops, or luxury yachts. There are only old houses, some sheep, and a kiosk that sells ice cream and postcards. A peaceful idyll. Stora Kornö is said to be Sweden's best-preserved fishing harbor. Here you will find old timber cabins and old, charming houses. There are no permanent residents left, but the descendants of the fishermen use the houses as summer homes and take good care of them.
It's nice to take a walk on the island, and a path leading southward brings you to a grazing area for sheep. Further out on the southeast side, there is a small cave carved out by ice and water. Towards the southwest, you come to a beach with skerries outside. On the northeast side of the island, there is the most popular bathing beach. It is sheltered from the southwest, but the beach itself is moderate.
A large house is used as a summer camp for children, and there is a small kiosk that sells ice cream and postcards.
The guest harbor is a floating dock located outside the private berths. Only boats less than 9 meters are allowed to stay on the inside. The harbor is sheltered from southern and western winds but is exposed to northerly winds. This can cause some choppy waters outside the floating dock.
Neighboring island Lille Kornö is a similar place, but a bit smaller.

Gullholmen is one of the finest gems on the Bohuslän coast. Gullholmen is a small island densely packed with small, old houses. A small bridge crosses a narrow strait to the larger Hermanö. Here lies the guest harbor. There are no cars here, and the place is a peaceful idyll. There are narrow paths between the well-maintained houses and jetties around the entire islet from which children swim. The children vacationing here must have a unique experience that they will remember as their best childhood memory.
In the harbor, there is an ice cream kiosk selling ice cream with homemade cones. The smell of freshly baked cones permeates the area, and there is always a long queue even though there are two other places nearby where you can buy ice cream. There is a restaurant in the harbor on an islet over the floating dock.
The harbor is well protected from all winds, especially westerly ones. The guest harbor is divided into two, each with its own entrance - one from the east and the other from the south. It is a popular harbor, so arrive early. There is electricity and water on the dock. In the harbor, there is also a grocery store, toilet, and shower.
About one kilometer further south on Hermanö, there is a swimming area, mini-golf, and a restaurant. Just west of the harbor, there is also a nice swimming area, but it is more exposed to the southwest wind.

Mollösund is located in the middle of the fairway inside Mollön. Here is a well-protected harbor. Perhaps not so charming due to car parking around the harbor and fishing industry right nearby, but a nice view of the village. South of the harbor there are cafes and a restaurant with a great sea view.
Mollösund has a mix of new and old buildings. But heading south along the sea there is a cobblestone street with well-preserved and rehabilitated old small houses. Here it is decorated with flowers and it is very idyllic. Expensive cars are parked here and the houses are probably vacation homes for wealthy people from Gothenburg. The wooden church a bit further up is worth a visit. An old windmill also sets the character of the place.
Over a hill from the harbor we find a popular bathing spot. By the lighthouse north of the harbor, there are smooth cliffs and a bathing spot for adults. It's a great place to sit when the sun sets.
In the harbor, there is water and electricity, toilets, and showers. Nearby there is a small grocery store.

Strømstad is a pleasant small town, but I rarely make my sailing trip here. Koster is more charming and is located just outside. However, if the weather is bad or we need to shop for something other than food, we pay Strømstad a visit.
In Strømstad, we find a number of pleasant outdoor restaurants and cafés, the Systembolag (state-run alcohol store), and shops. SeaSea boat equipment is available in the harbor. There is a square by the harbor where there is a market with many cheap goods in the summer. There is also an old town in Strømstad with cobblestone streets and wooden houses.
The inner harbor is located right by the center and is a good harbor within a breakwater, but it is often full. The outer harbor is more exposed, but you lie safely at the floating piers. Toilet and shower facilities are available in the harbor. Fuel is available at Strømstad Marina on the other side of the bay.

Kyrkosund, located at the southern tip of South Koster, faces the archipelago and is somewhat of a natural harbor. Here, there are old sea houses, wooden piers, and a charming environment. Southerly winds blow strongly here, but you lie safely within the breakwater. There is a beach right by the breakwater. If it blows too much on the beach, you can walk or bike to Kilesand, which is just over 1 km away. It is a long, lovely sandy beach that faces east and is sheltered from the southwest winds. It is about 3 km to the store in the middle of the island.

There are two guest harbors on Nord-Koster: One in Kostersundet and one at Vettnett in the northeast.
The guest harbor in Kostersundet (this one) is the largest. There is a long floating dock in the strait. The southwest wind blows strong through Kostersundet, but the sea remains calm and it is safe to dock. Most of the buildings, as well as restaurants and other activities, are located here. A beautiful sandy beach is located in Basteviken, 750 meters across the island. There is a small cable ferry to Syd-Koster.
Nord-Koster is a bit smaller than Syd-Koster and large parts of the island are a nature reserve. The built-up area is therefore significantly smaller and it is possible to get around on foot. There is little traffic and it is quieter than Syd-Koster, but very charming. There are two restaurants and a couple of cafes on the island. A large kiosk has a limited selection of groceries.

The first time I was in Grebbestad in 1983, there was nothing in the guest harbor except for some workshops and a fish market. The town was located far inland and there was not much happening there either. The only reason to go to Grebbestad was that there was a liquor store there. But later the guest harbor was expanded with wide wooden docks, and the old workshops were converted into restaurants and summer shops. Today the harbor is quite attractive, especially for those who love shopping. There is a beach outside the pier.
There is live music played at one of the restaurants on the dock every night during the season until 11 PM, and there are many people on the docks. Therefore, I prefer to stay on the floating dock on the islet at the far end of the pier, where it is more peaceful. There it is also possible to grill and swim. There is electricity and water on the docks. Do not use an anchor; there are mooring buoys or ropes from the docks. Groceries and a liquor store can be found inside Grebbestad, about 1 km from the guest harbor. On the other side of the bay, a little further in, there is a marina with fuel and boat equipment.

Väderöarna is a group of small islands and skerries located some distance out at sea off Fjellbacka. Here lies an old lighthouse station with a small harbor. The lighthouse is automated, but the lighthouse service operates a guest harbor here. This is the only state-operated guest harbor I know of; otherwise, most are municipal. There is also a cafe here.
Väderöarna is preferably visited in calm weather since they lie out in open sea, but then it's extremely popular in return. The small lighthouse harbor doesn't have many spots, but in the bay outside, more boats can anchor in calm wind conditions. There are also natural harbors on the islands.
It is a fantastic nature experience to be here. There is a hiking trail you can follow around the island, and the sunset is incredibly beautiful. There is an old lookout tower where a local association runs a museum. There is also a cafe here where you can sit on the pier and have a beer.

Malmön is a vacation island just south of Smögen, but there are also many permanent residents there. There is a free car ferry to the island, but there is little car traffic. There are two guest harbors: One is located in the old harbor in a well-protected cove. Nothing much happens here, but it is a short distance to swimming spots and beaches just south of the harbor. The other is in a private marina a little further north. Here, there are a couple of restaurants and a grocery store.
The place is quite pleasant. There are detached houses with gardens and nearly a neighborhood with holiday homes by the marina. There is an 18-hole mini-golf course with some original courses between the two guest harbors.
The strongest feature of the place is the swimming spots south of the old harbor. There is a small beach and smooth rocks right by the harbor, but a few hundred meters further south, there is a great beach with a swimming pier. Swimming lessons are also offered here.
The old harbor is well protected from all winds. The newer marina has floating docks further out. You also lie safely here, but it can be a bit swell with northeasterly winds. The marina has water and electricity on the dock and a somewhat worn-down service facility with toilets and showers.

Grundsund is located, as the name suggests, in a shallow strait. The approach is from the north. There are buildings on both sides with boathouses and old houses. There is a connection to the mainland and some cars. On the east side, there is a store, and on the west side lies the church. There is also a small beach at the southernmost part of the strait by the marina. At the end of the pier on the east side, there is a café with a great view of the passage. Here, a walking trail begins, which is built over the rocks along the water.
There are guest berths on both sides, but it is best to moor on the west side of the strait. Here, it is sheltered from the southwest. The guest harbor is located near a parking lot, but it is a short distance to a charming, cobblestone street. Water and electricity are available in the harbor.

I first visited Käringön in 1985. We arrived in rainy weather and docked in the bay which was then the only harbor. We found an incredibly charming fishing harbor. We took a walk across the island and discovered a haven of old small houses. Eventually, we came to the church and the rectory. In the rectory, there was a simple café where a young girl served cakes and coffee.
Today, Käringön is one of the most popular harbors. A large guest harbor with floating docks has been built outside the old fishing harbor. Bohuslän's most famous restaurant, Peterson's Krog known from the TV program 'Tina's Kitchen,' has been established here, a hotel has sprung up, and several apartments. The old rectory is still a place of service, but now a better restaurant. The old style has been maintained, and it is definitely worth a visit. In the harbor area, there are several small cafés and a kiosk, as well as a mini-golf course and a fashion shop.
Käringön is still one of the biggest gems in Bohuslän, but has lost a bit of its charm due to commercialization.
The best harbor is in the old bay, but it fills up first. The floating docks outside are sheltered from the southwest wind, but are exposed to the north wind, and in strong north winds, it can be uncomfortable to dock there. Bohuslän's finest service building with clean, tiled toilets and showers, as well as washing machines, is located on the other side of the bay. There is also a grocery store and a fish shop in the harbor. Electricity and water on the dock. No fuel is available.
There is a bathing area a little east of the harbor. On the other side of the island, there is also a bathing area on the rocks.

Marstrand stands out from all other places on the Bohuslän coast. While most places are old fishing villages, Marstrand has city status and is Bohuslän's smallest city. On Marstrandsön there are no cars, but cobblestone streets and wooden buildings. Here, one walks through history. The city was founded in the 13th century by the Norwegian king Håkon Håkonson. The church from that time still stands. When Bohuslän was transferred to Sweden in 1658, the construction of Carlsten Fortress began, giving the island its characteristic profile. It is definitely worth a visit even though it costs a bit of money. The homes of the fishermen from the herring fishing period in the 18th century still stand. However, in 1808 the herring were gone. In 1822, the first spa was built and the era of the bathers began. Marstrand became Sweden's most popular bathing place. King Oscar II came every summer from 1887 to Marstrand, which made the place a high-society destination. Society followed the king and a specific society house was built. Marstrand reflects a past wealth with beautiful wooden houses, but also a division with old fisher houses. 100% charm!
Today it is the boat tourists who characterize the city and Marstrand is the sailing center of the West Coast. There is a large guest harbor where boats from several nations lie, including several yachts over 50 feet. The harbor is sheltered from the southwest, but some swell from the sea outside can enter. Electricity and water on the piers.
There is a coastal path around the island and several bathing spots. There are a number of restaurants and cafés in the city as well as some shops. A small grocery store in the harbor. There is a ferry across the strait to the modern part of Marstrand. Here you will find more stores, but no charm.
In Marstrand, Skagerrak ends. If you sail further south, you sail in Kattegat.
Marstrand is not a place to be missed!

Källö-Knippla is located between Marstrand and Gothenburg. It is essentially two islands where the sound between them has been partially filled in, making them one island.
It is an old fishing harbor and the buildings are a mix of old and modern houses. The old buildings are located on Knippla south of the harbor, while on Källö there are modern residential houses. On Källö, there are two nice bathing spots a walk north of the harbor, one with smooth rocks and one with a small beach. These are east-facing and shielded from the southwest. There is also a walking trail to the northern end of the island.
In the harbor, there is a café and a kiosk. There is a grocery store and a fishmonger near the harbor.
The harbor has an outer and an inner basin. You are best positioned in the inner basin if there is space. Additionally, there is a third basin north of the breakwater.

Brevik lies to the southwest and right by the archipelago. To get here, one must pass through Kostersundet between North and South Koster. The southwesterly wind blows strongly here, but it is safe behind the breakwater. There are only a few guest spots and the place is quite dead, but it has a peaceful and beautiful location in good weather. Approximately 2 km to the shop in the middle of the island.

Northwest of Havstensund lies Kalvön. Here lies a small, old fishing harbor on the west side facing the sea. It is a bit off the main route and not many visit it. There is also only space for 10 boats. But this is a well-hidden idyll!
The pier is an old wooden pier on stilts, and old boathouses are scattered around. It resembles a Northern Norwegian fishing harbor. A path leads up to the center of the island. There, a cluster of around 20 old, beautiful houses is revealed. This is an old fishing community that is well preserved. There are no permanent residents anymore, but the houses are used as summer homes and the owners have rehabilitated and taken care of the old houses.
Kalvön is one of three islands that have grown together. In the 1930s, a 5 km long grass-covered road was made across the islands. The plan was to build a bridge, but it was never constructed and there are no cars here. The islanders still maintain the road, and it is ideal for jogging.
The harbor is well protected from the sea, but it gets quite windy when the southwesterly winds blow. In the harbor, there is only an outhouse. There is no water or electricity, and nothing to spend money on. Here, there is only charm and idyll.

There are two guest harbours on Nord-Koster: one in Kostersundet and one at Vettnett in the northeast.
Vettnett has a smaller harbour. It is very cozy, and sheltered from the southwest, but is best suited for smaller boats. The floating dock on the outer part of the harbour is exposed to waves from passing ferries and northern winds. Deep inside, boats are well protected. There's no commercial activity here, but a nice beach is located right by the harbour. There's also a fantastic beach near the campsite on the north side of the island.

Havstensund is located in a narrow strait where most of the boat traffic on this coast passes. I often stop here for bunkering. Here you can find fuel, gas, boat equipment and some groceries in the same store. But I rarely stay long. There are too many waves from passing boats. There are a couple of restaurants along the sea, otherwise not much happens here. Nice beach outside the strait, but it is exposed to the southwest.

Fjellbacka is an old fishing community dominated by a large granite church and the mountain behind the village. Fjellbacka is a popular tourist destination for both boaters and drivers. Despite the cars, it is a charming place with old buildings. Many of the old houses are used today as holiday homes, while the permanent residents have moved further inland to modern houses. There are several restaurants and cafes along the waterfront, and further up the hill, there are more shops. You will also find art shops here with artists using Fjellbacka's archipelago as their inspiration.
A nice excursion is to climb Vetterfjellet through Ramneklovan - a long and deep gorge in the mountain. Start at the Ingrid Bergman statue in the square. At the top, there is a fantastic view over the immense archipelago outside Fjellbacka. The dominant granite church is also worth a visit, and sometimes concerts are held here.
There is a large guest harbor with docks both by the square and outside the bathing island. The latter is a longer walk to the center, but you have a short distance to the bathing area. There are showers and toilets at the square and on the bathing island, and water is available on the docks. You are safe in the harbor, but the southwest wind is strong here.

Hamburgsund guest harbor is located in the middle of the long strait between Hamburgø and the mainland, at the ferry terminal. There are guest harbors on both sides of the strait. On the mainland side, there is a shop and café, and on the island side, there is mini golf.
The northern part of Hamburgsund is charming with sea houses and beautiful homes on both sides. The area around the guest harbor is not as charming. Here, there is a mix of commercial buildings, apartment blocks, and holiday homes.
The harbor is relatively well sheltered from westerly winds, and it is often advantageous to stay here when the wind is strong. However, there is still a draft through the strait.

Hunnebostrand is one of the most pleasant small places on the mainland. Here is a large guest harbor in a bay surrounded by red sea sheds. There are a number of restaurants and summer shops in the harbor area. At the Lobster Café, they have live lobster. Behind the village is a viewpoint hill worth a visit. Here there is a great view over Hunnebostrand and the archipelago outside. On the islet outside the harbor, there are bathing places. By the bridge over there, there is a mini-golf course. A grocery store is located 500 meters up in the village past the church. North of the harbor along the sea is a stone sculpture park worth a visit. Various artists have made stone sculptures that are scattered around. Even further north is a nice public bathing place.
The guest harbor is quite well protected inside a bay, but the outer part can be exposed to winds from the northwest. There is water and electricity on the docks. Do not use an anchor in the harbor - buoys or stern fastenings from the dock are laid out.

Smøgen is one of the most well-known places on the coast, and it is very crowded here during the season, with both boaters and car visitors. Smøgen is located on an island with a bridge connection. The guest harbor is located in the old fishing harbor - a long inlet into the island. Most of the old fishing huts have been converted into summer shops and restaurants. The place still retains some charm even though it has become very commercialized. Here, everyone gathers - from small boats to large yachts. Especially the outer part of the harbor is characterized by partying and drinking during the high season. Further in, it is more peaceful.
If you walk along the docks inward and further along, you will find a nice bathing spot with smooth rocks and a diving tower. In good weather, there are many people here. There is also a hiking trail further out on the island.
On the hill at the innermost part of the inlet, there is a mini-golf course with a view over the archipelago.
There are guest spots on both sides of the inlet, but the action is on the right side. If you dock on the left side, it's a long walk around, but a small ferry crosses over. Most of the spots on the right side are ones that need to be reserved on dockspot.com. During the high season, you must reserve at least two days in advance to get a place. At the innermost and outermost parts, there are non-reservable spots. Don't be afraid to go far into the right channel, it is possible to turn around all the way at the back.

Malmön is a holiday island a bit south of Smögen, but there are also many permanent residents there. There is a free car ferry to the island, but it has little car traffic. There are two guest harbors: One is located in the old harbor in a well-protected inlet. Nothing much happens here, but it is a short distance to swimming spots and beaches just south of the harbor. The other is a private marina a little further north. Here, there are a couple of restaurants and a grocery store.
The place is quite pleasant. There are detached houses with gardens and almost a neighborhood of holiday homes by the marina. There is an 18-hole mini-golf course with some original courses between the two guest harbors.
The place's strongest feature is the swimming spots south of the old harbor. There is a small beach and smooth rocks right by the harbor, but a few hundred meters further south there is a great beach with a swimming pier. Swimming lessons are also offered here.
The old harbor is well protected from all winds. The newer marina has floating docks further out. It's also safe to anchor here, but it can get a bit swell with northeasterly winds. At the marina, there is water and electricity on the dock and a somewhat worn service facility with toilets and showers.

There are three guest harbors in Lysekil. The most important one is located furthest south. There is a large marina where two sections serve as guest harbors. One section is occasionally reserved for sailing events. There are ice stands and a restaurant in the harbor area. A little further in, there is a guest harbor in the fishing harbor. It is less attractive. On the other side of the headland, there is also a guest harbor in an industrial area. I would almost say that if you cannot find space in the main guest harbor, skip Lysekil and go to Fiskebäckskil on the other side of the fjord.
Lysekil is a small town the size of Strömstad, but with not quite as many tourists. The town is situated on a headland with harbors on both sides. The outermost part is a public area with beaches and smooth rocky shores. From the sea, the large granite church dominates the view. The old part of town is quite pleasant. The southernmost part consists of old wooden houses. The old town center has cobblestone streets and large wooden houses. In the center, there is a charming little square with cafés. Further inland it is a more ordinary town. The town's biggest attraction is Havets hus - a nice aquarium. Not large, but worth a visit. With the same ticket, you can play minigolf outside, and there is a café with a view of the sea.

Fiskebäckskil is situated directly across Gulmarsfjorden from Lysekil, in a cove with an inlet from the north. The houses are closely packed in hilly terrain with narrow roads. At the bottom, you can find fishermen’s cottages from the herring fishing period, further up are houses from the shipping and bathing guest era with glass verandas in Swiss style, and at the top are holiday homes from the 1900s. At the northernmost point of the peninsula, there's also a hotel with a restaurant. The place is quite charming. A Swedish TV series was filmed here and in Grundsund, which is located on the same island.
The guest harbor is located further inside the cove along with the marina. Here, there is a workshop, parking space, and it’s not particularly idyllic. But it’s not far to walk to the residential area. The harbor is well protected from all wind directions, but strong north winds are noticeable. The harbor has all facilities. There is also a small café in the marina.

I was in Skärhamn for the first time in 1984. I was supposed to change crew and celebrate the sign-off and sign-on. But we only found a gas station with a snack bar, and the town wasn't particularly charming. It would be almost 30 years before I returned. By then, many changes had taken place. At the outermost part of the harbor area, a number of restaurants have been built, and the Nordic Watercolor Museum has been built here. It is a beautiful, modern building that fits well into the environment and is situated right on the water's edge. If you are interested in art, it is worth a visit. If you want to eat, the restaurant in the museum is a good alternative with its great location and style.
A new guest harbor has also been established. It is located within the large marina on some rocks. It is very pleasant here; docks with tables and benches, grill areas, and small seahouses with toilets and showers.
The town itself is a mix of new and old houses, and the snack bar is still here. Parts of the town have a certain charm, but it is not the main attraction. The Watercolor Museum, the restaurants at the outer harbor area, and the cozy guest harbor make it worth a visit.

Ă…stol is a small, round island densely packed with old houses. It is only 700 meters in diameter, but 300 people live here, plus many summer guests. The island was developed during the herring fishing period in the 1700s, and there are still fishermen here. However, the buildings today are more modern.
The island is located just north of Marstrand and is therefore easy to sail past. But it is definitely worth a visit - it is an idyll. The harbour is located in a cove that cuts into the island from the east. It is a good harbour in all wind directions, but an east wind can be a bit strong.
There is a small shop on the island and a smokehouse and restaurant northeast in the harbour. Water on the dock. Diesel at the smokehouse.

Hyppeln is located between Marstrand and Gothenburg. There are many populated islands in the archipelago outside Gothenburg. These are old fishing communities that have gradually become almost suburbs of Gothenburg. Many of the permanent residents commute to Gothenburg and there are ferries to the islands. Some of the houses are also used as summer homes.
Hyppeln has a pleasant guest harbour with tables and grills on the pier. There is a small shop and a café by the harbour. There is a beautiful coastal path around the whole island. The island is not so big that it takes more than an hour to walk around. The island is situated at the outer edge of the archipelago and the sun sets in the sea. From the top near the water tower, you have a nice view. On the north side of the island, there is a small beach with a swimming pier. The small community has a mix of old and new houses. Some with asbestos panels and some renovated. Despite there being only a few hundred meters of road here, a car ferry comes here and there are cars parked by the houses. It is the island's beautiful nature that raises the overall impression.
The harbour is east-facing and has a breakwater. It is safe in all wind directions, but it can be quite windy in the harbour as the island is low towards the southwest. Water and electricity are available on the pier. The service facility is relatively new and has toilets and showers.

There are several guest harbors in Gothenburg. I have stayed in Långedrag, a bit outside the city center, but I recommend Gothenburg guest harbor at Lilla Bommen in the city center. It is located by the opera in the heart of the city, and everything is within easy reach. There is also a guest harbor in a marina further up the Göta River. The approach to Gothenburg is marked by large industrial ports. It is the largest port in the Nordics with many ship calls every day, but there is plenty of space for leisure boats too. You pass a fantastic replica of a warship from the sailing ship era.
Gothenburg is a city comparable in size to Oslo. You don't sail here to experience charm, idyll, or beautiful nature. Here you find everything a big city can offer. Gothenburg has wide boulevards and large, stately houses and seems to have been a wealthier city than Oslo. Many restaurants and cafes with outdoor seating in the summer. The main attractions for vacationers are Liseberg and Universeum. They are 10 minutes by bus (red or green route) from the harbor. Liseberg is a large amusement park with the Nordics' biggest and scariest roller coaster. There are enormous crowds during the holiday season, and queues of up to an hour for a ride. Money goes quickly here. Universeum is a mix of a zoo, aquarium, and technical museum. Personally, I think Universeum is far preferable to Liseberg.
Gothenburg guest harbor is well protected from all winds. There is electricity and water on the piers and WC, shower, and washing machines by the harbor office. It is quite open around the harbor, and a large square and roads must be crossed before you reach the city itself. Not much happens in the harbor. There is a small café next to the harbor office and a pub in the barque Viking, which is moored at the guest harbor. It is a large sailing ship used as a hotel. On the other side of the large square, there is a big shopping center with groceries among other things. This is also where the shopping streets start.
